Lampshade making with Cath Kidston

Will and I were lucky enough to receive tickets to Cath Kidston’s lampshade making class and last night we made our way to the Norwich store with a little trepidation and a lot of excitement!  We were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and offered a continuous supply of refreshments, including home-baked cupcakes, biscuits, juice and my personal favourite – jelly babies!

The shop was set up ready for the class with several tables laid out with everything we would need to create our own handmade lampshade.  We were fortunate to share our table with another mother and daughter team, Jayne and Tertia, who were great company.

The first thing to do was choose our fabric and we were offered a wonderful range of gorgeous Cath Kidston florals.  We both choose the same print so we would have matching lampshades but as you can see there was a variety of fabrics being used by the group.

We each had our own kit which contained the frame, backing sheet, double-sided sticky tape and a finishing tool and of course the shop provided our fabric.  Fortunately, we had the lovely Jess to talk us through the process so we didn’t need to read the instructions!  If you would like to buy a kit yourself, they are available here.

The technique for making the lampshades is fairly straight-forward, especially with Jess’ expert guidance, but you do need a steady hand for the cutting and maybe a helping hand with putting the frame and fabric together at the end.

Once all the fiddly preparation is complete, the lampshade came together remarkably quickly and the finishing off stage, where the rough edges are tucked in and hidden, was very satisfying – I think we were all rather proud of the end results!

We met some lovely people, the mood was very relaxed and everyone seemed to be enjoying the class.  There were several mother and daughter pairs and it was a lovely was to spend an evening with your loved one (even though there was some light-hearted bickering going on around the room!).  If you missed the opportunity to join one of the Cath Kidston classes going on around the country, they have added a “how-to” video to their website so that you can have a go at home.

We are really hoping our local Cath Kidston shop will be holding more evenings like this in the future and if you would like to be kept up-to-date with upcoming events then be sure to sign up to their Email Club.  Maybe we’ll see you at the next event?  LouLou & Will x
